Recently, communities worldwide have experienced a resurgence of interest in local and rural dance clubs, venues that once thrived during Hollywood’s Golden Age. These historic dance halls, from the 1920s through the 1940s, served as vibrant cultural hubs where music, dance, and community spirit united people, creating lasting bonds during America’s most transformative decades.

My upcoming book, Hollywood’s Golden Age: The Segna Collection, explores this era through stories behind signed photographs of 112 Hollywood legends and personal encounters at the Segna's roadside stop, situated halfway between Hollywood and Palm Springs. The Segna's also had its own dance hall beginning in the 1920s, which was a vital community space. These small-town halls were more than entertainment venues—they embodied resilience, hope, and cultural pride, especially during World War II.
Today, this spirit is alive again. Vintage dance halls from the 1920s and 1940s are experiencing a global revival, fueled by a desire for genuine connection, live music, and retro aesthetics. Communities from Paris to Medellín, and from the UK to China, are hosting large-scale swing, Charleston, and ballroom events, blending traditional styles with modern energy. Major venues in London, Guangzhou, and beyond are organizing festivals and social dances that bring people together in face-to-face celebration.
Back home, venues like Wyoming’s Cassie’s saloon and Los Angeles’s Origin are offering diverse dance experiences—from retro disco to traditional square dancing—highlighting a growing demand for physical spaces centered on movement and community.
This movement underscores a timeless truth: whether in Hollywood’s grand ballrooms or small-town dance halls, dance remains a powerful symbol of resilience, joy, and unity across generations. My book delves into this rich history, illustrating how dance halls helped shape social bonds and cultural identity, lessons that continue to resonate today.
Stay tuned for the release of Hollywood’s Golden Age: The Segna Collection, a journey into the past that celebrates community, resilience, and the enduring power of dance.

Introducing the Pre-Book Launch Story Series

Dr. James DeCarli is a scientist, public health researcher and educator, author, passionate historian, and storyteller. This page will reveal the hidden stories behind his upcoming non-fiction book, Hollywood's Golden Age - The Segna Collection: Stories Behind Signed Photographs of 112 Actors from the 1930s–1940s—Immigration, War, and Resilience. The series follows the life of a young girl—my mother—in the early 1940s, living in a community rooted in Trentino-Alto Adige, representing both sides of my family, situated halfway between Hollywood and Palm Springs. Her experiences—shaped by music, dance, Hollywood stars, and resilience—serve as a vital connection to Hollywood’s Golden Age, inspiring her and countless others along the way.
