Since the dawn of the 20th century, the shadows of despair have touched lives across generations—darkness that once seemed insurmountable. In the 1940s, amid a world torn by war and upheaval, stories of loss and silence echoed in Hollywood and many homes. While times have changed, the challenge of mental health and the risk of suicide remain ongoing issues. Yet, even during those turbulent times, hope and help emerged as vital lifelines.
History teaches us a powerful lesson: understanding our past can inform our present and future. By reflecting on these difficult moments, we can learn how resilience was built and how compassion and awareness continue to be our most effective tools. My upcoming book explores these historical periods and the stories of hope and resilience that remind us: every life is worth fighting for.
Today, suicide continues to cast a long shadow, claiming lives at an unsettling rate. But the message remains clear: suicide is preventable. It is a silent cry that can be heard, a pain that can be eased, and a darkness that can be pierced through compassion, awareness, and timely intervention.

This September, during National Suicide Prevention Month, let us remember that no one is alone in their struggle. We have the tools—knowledge, empathy, and resources—to offer hope and save lives. Whether through a caring conversation, a simple gesture, or connecting someone to professional help, every action counts.
As we honor this month, I invite you to join me in spreading awareness, fostering understanding, and standing as a beacon of hope for those in need. Because in the face of darkness, awareness and prevention can light the way toward healing and renewal.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available now:
  • Call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — available 24/7 for immediate support.
  • Reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
  • Call Teen Line 800-852-8336, or text TEEN to 83986
  • Remember, you are not alone. Help is just a call or text away.
Prevention Tips for Help:
  • Reach out with compassion—listen without judgment.
  • Recognize warning signs: isolation, hopelessness, sudden mood changes.
  • Encourage seeking professional help—therapy, helplines, support groups.
  • Be present—sometimes, just being there can make all the difference.
Remember, prevention begins with awareness. Together, we can turn the tide and save lives.

Introducing the Pre-Book Launch Story Series

Dr. James DeCarli is a scientist, public health researcher and educator, author, passionate historian, and storyteller. This page will reveal the hidden stories behind his upcoming non-fiction book, Hollywood's Golden Age - The Segna Collection: Stories Behind Signed Photographs of 112 Actors from the 1930s–1940s—Immigration, War, and Resilience. The series follows the life of a young girl—my mother—in the early 1940s, living in a community rooted in Trentino-Alto Adige, representing both sides of my family, situated halfway between Hollywood and Palm Springs. Her experiences—shaped by music, dance, Hollywood stars, and resilience—serve as a vital connection to Hollywood’s Golden Age, inspiring her and countless others along the way.
