Hollywood’s Golden Age: Stars at the Segna - An Authentic and Extensive Personal Collection of 144 Signed Photographs & Family Narratives from 112 Legendary Actors of the 1930s & 1940s

Unpublished Draft: This page is a draft overview of my current research and book projects. Content may be updated as the work develops.

Hollywood’s Golden Age: Stars at the Segna is a genuine, personal collection that offers an authentic glimpse into Hollywood’s most celebrated period—an era often defined by the profound impacts of the Great Depression and World War II. It features 144 signed photographs and family narratives from 112 legendary actors of the 1930s and 1940s. Many of these stars visited the Segna gas service station and restaurant, where my mother, a Segna herself, had the opportunity to meet and collect autographs during their visits. Recognizing the importance of these encounters, she later expanded her collection by reaching out directly to studios, securing additional photographs and signatures from many of Hollywood’s icons.

Set against the lively backdrop of her family’s property—a bustling hub that included a gas station, Italian bar, gift shop, dance hall, motel, and her childhood home—located along the main route between Hollywood and Palm Springs, these artifacts serve as a tangible connection to Hollywood’s legendary stars and the broader social history of the time. The photographs are often accompanied by original studio envelopes with authentic stamps, adding to their rarity and value. As a young girl, Anita’s keen eye and love for Hollywood’s artistry led her to meet many stars and secure their signatures, creating a deeply personal link to Hollywood’s history.

Throughout this period, America faced unprecedented challenges—economic hardship from the Great Depression and the upheaval of global conflict during World War II. These events profoundly influenced Hollywood, inspiring resilience, hope, and a sense of community that is reflected in this collection. Over the years, her passion and curiosity transformed this collection into a remarkable testament to Hollywood’s influence on community life and personal histories amid these tumultuous times. These treasured photographs capture moments when the glamour of the silver screen intersected with the struggles and resilience of everyday life.

This book is more than a compilation of autographs; it’s a living history that celebrates family, community, and the craftsmanship behind Hollywood’s visual splendor. It also highlights my father, Condy DeCarli’s, contribution as a master craftsman whose work in mold-making and architectural ornamentation helped shape Hollywood’s iconic theaters, private homes, and public spaces—spaces that continue to inspire.

"Hollywood's Golden Age" offers a rare glimpse into an era when personal encounters with stars were treasured moments, preserved through authentic signatures and original studio envelopes. Whether you’re a collector, historian, or cultural enthusiast, I invite you to explore these artifacts and stories, woven into the rich tapestry of mid-century California and shaped by the broader historical context of the Great Depression and World War II.

Join me on this journey into Hollywood’s Golden Age—where personal histories, legendary stars, and artistic craftsmanship come together to preserve a legacy worth celebrating.
