Hollywood's Golden Age - The Segna Collection: 
Stories Behind Signed Photographs of 112 Actors from the 1930s and 1940s-Immigration, War, and Resilience

Hollywood’s Golden Age—an era of glamour, resilience, and transformation—comes alive through my mother's personal childhood collection, rooted in family history and cultural memory. Discover stories of iconic stars from the 1930s and 1940s, community spirit, and the enduring legacy of a bygone era.

Introduction to the Book
​The Segna Collection offers more than just a compilation of autographed photographs; it provides a vivid glimpse into a transformative period in American history—shaped by the Great Depression, World War II, and waves of immigration that reshaped the cultural landscape. These artifacts reflect the resilience, hope, and community spirit that defined an era when Hollywood served as both a sanctuary of glamour and a mirror of societal struggles.  

By preserving these personal connections between Hollywood stars and everyday Americans, this collection illustrates how art, entertainment, and community resilience intertwined during challenging times. It’s a powerful reminder of the enduring importance of cultural memory, shared history, and the human stories that continue to inspire us today.

Many of these stars visited the Segna’s gas service station and Italian family bar, where my mother, Anita—herself a Segna—had the opportunity to meet and collect autographs during their visits. Recognizing the excitement of these encounters, she continued to expand her collection by reaching out directly to studios, securing additional photographs and signatures from many of Hollywood’s icons.
Personal Encounters & Historic Moments
This remarkable collection comprises 144 photographs, each personally addressed to my mother from 112 of the most iconic actors of the 1930s and 1940s. It is considered one of the largest and most distinctive collections of its kind from that era. The collection’s personalized nature—featuring direct correspondence from Hollywood personalities—makes it especially rare, valuable, and historically significant.  

Not only does it rank among the larger collections from that period, but it also stands out as one of the most unique, reflecting a deeply personal relationship between my mother and Hollywood stars. This combination of size, personal connection, and historical context underscores its rarity and importance as a treasured artifact from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
​The Segna Motel & California Garage
Built in the late 1920s, the Segna Motel and California Garage was a quintessential roadside stop located halfway between Hollywood and Palm Springs on Historic U.S. Route 99. More than just a gas station and motor court, it was a lively hub that included the California Garage, an Italian family bar, a food and gift shop, restrooms, a dance hall, bocce courts, and gardens—creating a vibrant, nostalgic setting that blended mobility, entertainment, and community in this agricultural region.  

Its strategic location made it a popular stop for Hollywood actors in the 1930s and 1940s, who came for gas, refreshments, and a taste of local hospitality. The garage and motel became a symbol of a bygone era of travel, connection, and regional charm.
A Childhood in the Heart of Hollywood’s Golden Era
Set against the lively backdrop of her family’s property—a bustling hub that also included her childhood home—located along the main route between Hollywood and Palm Springs, this was a small community rooted in Trentino-Alto Adige, a region in northern Italy, representing both sides of my family. These Hollywood Golden Age artifacts serve as tangible connections to Hollywood’s legendary stars who visited and to the broader social history of the era. The photographs are often accompanied by original studio envelopes with authentic stamps, adding to their rarity and value.

As a young girl, Anita’s interest in Hollywood’s artistry was sparked by her interactions with customers (mostly encouraged by her mother, when she was doing schoolwork), which led her to meet stars and secure their signatures, creating a deeply personal link to Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Resilience in Tumultuous Times  
Throughout this period, America faced unprecedented challenges—economic hardship from the Great Depression and global upheaval during World War II. These events deeply influenced Hollywood, inspiring resilience, hope, and a strong sense of community that is vividly reflected in this collection. Over the years, my mother’s passion and curiosity transformed these photographs into a remarkable testament to Hollywood’s enduring influence on community life and personal histories amid turbulent times.

These treasured images capture moments when the glamour of the silver screen intersected with the struggles and resilience of everyday life, offering a powerful glimpse into an era marked by both hardship and hope.
Lessons from the Past
This collection is more than just a compilation of autographs; it’s a living history that offers lessons for today. In an era where communities face new challenges—from global crises to social upheavals—this collection reminds us of the importance of resilience, hope, and the power of community. Just as Hollywood served as a source of inspiration during uncertain times, these stories and artifacts highlight how shared history, cultural legacy, and personal connections can help us navigate the present and shape a more resilient future.
Honoring Heritage and Craftsmanship
This book also emphasizes that preserving history—through photographs, stories, and craftsmanship—is vital for understanding our collective identity and ensuring that future generations learn from the past. It underscores the importance of cultural memory, the value of authentic personal relationships, and the need to honor the craftsmanship behind Hollywood’s visual splendor—values that remain relevant today. Additionally, I highlight my father, Condy DeCarli’s, contribution as a master craftsman, whose work in mold-making and architectural ornamentation helped shape Hollywood’s iconic theaters, private homes, and public spaces—spaces that continue to inspire and connect us to our shared cultural heritage.
