My upcoming book, Hollywood’s Golden Age: The Segna Collection, explores this era through stories behind signed photographs of 112 Hollywood legends and personal encounters at the Segna's roadside stop, situated halfway between Hollywood and Palm Springs. The Segna's also had its own dance hall beginning in the 1920s, which was a vital community space. These small-town halls were more than entertainment venues—they embodied resilience, hope, and cultural pride, especially during World War II.
Today, this spirit is alive again. Vintage dance halls from the 1920s and 1940s are experiencing a global revival, fueled by a desire for genuine connection, live music, and retro aesthetics. Communities from Paris to Medellín, and from the UK to China, are hosting large-scale swing, Charleston, and ballroom events, blending traditional styles with modern energy. Major venues in London, Guangzhou, and beyond are organizing festivals and social dances that bring people together in face-to-face celebration.
Back home, venues like Wyoming’s Cassie’s saloon and Los Angeles’s Origin are offering diverse dance experiences—from retro disco to traditional square dancing—highlighting a growing demand for physical spaces centered on movement and community.

In the rural stretch of historic Route 99, nestled between lush grape vineyards and towering eucalyptus trees, there was a little roadside stop that represented that era. Back in the 1940s, it was called Segna’s Motel and California Garage. Already 20 years old, it was more than just a gas station and motel, and the Segna's home it was a crossroads of stories, music, and fleeting encounters.
​Anita, Segna’s daughter and about 8 years old, often walked from her house just across the property, beyond a lush lawn and a winding cobblestone walkway, to their bustling roadside stop. Her feet felt the firm rocks laid in concrete, lined with vibrant lawns and flowers, under a canopy of American Elm and California Pepper trees. The family’s Spanish Mediterranean-style home, along with the motel and gas station, mirrored the elegance of Hollywoodland’s architecture from the 1920s, designed by a craftsman and architect with many connections to Hollywood’s golden age. But that part of the story will be told in the pages of the upcoming book.
What made this roadside stop truly special, beyond its charming design, was the warm hospitality of Tyrolean immigrants who ran it. Their genuine friendliness and the sense of community they fostered made it more than just a fueling station; it was a haven during wartime, a place where people gathered, shared stories, and connected.
​One day, Anita’s curiosity led her to the counter. Sitting there was a young actor, about her age, nervously twirling a pen. She didn’t know their name then, but she sensed there was something familiar and extraordinary about them—an energy, a dream shimmering behind their eyes. They exchanged a quick glance, a fleeting moment that seemed to suspend time. For Anita, it was a simple encounter, but for that young actor, it was the beginning of something much bigger.
That moment marked the start of a remarkable journey. Over the years, Anita’s fascination with Hollywood’s Golden Age deepened as she connected with many actors, collecting autographs and stories—each one woven into the fabric of her life and her community.
